Easy-Drinking, Entry-Level Bordeaux is a Clear Winner
We had brought this wine over on our most previous French container, and it's been resting nicely in our warehouse for the past few months. Now, it's primed for release, and I'm quite happy with the results. This is a delicious wine that can be drank any day of the week, which is really what Bordeaux at this price point is supposed to be. It makes me reminisce about my time on the vineyards there oh so many years ago, and coming in from the field to get our daily ration. Fulfilling and satisfying, I'm a happy man.

Creamy raspberry, cranberry and violet flower nose. Medium palate with earthy tobacco tones up front, followed by black currant, blueberry, cranberry and plum skin, with a dash of oak coming out through the finish. Ready to drink, good around the dinner table or a nice early-evening glass. 93 Points - JZ Aug '18

Spoiler alert: The following describes an outstanding red Bordeaux wine that may very well be sold out by the time you finish reading. The result of a unique and attentive selection, only one tank will be chosen to create this wine. Complexity, rarity, concentration are the qualities sought for this exceptional Supérieur.

Members have flipped over the value-packed Château Clou du Pin since we began offering this Direct Import a few vintages ago. This newly released 2016 is the best wine yet from this family-owned estate, which sits just a stone’s throw from the famed vineyards of St. Emilion (home to such luminaries as Angelus, Ausone and Cheval Blanc).

Like many of the top St. Emilion, this red Bordeaux is 100% Merlot. Grapes are sourced from the Fontana family’s 300 hectares of incredible terroir. We’re talking about the clay- and chalk-rich soils that make this part of France one of the world’s best places to make red wine. Silky softness but also powerful and full bodied, the 2016 Clou du Pin drinks like a Classed Growth Bordeaux, and is already a joy to consume though it has a long life ahead should you choose to tuck this bargain away in the cellar.

·    The new-on-the-scene 2016 Bordeaux vintage is already causing a stir in the press. “The En Primeur tastings have just begun, but already reveal an impressive vintage, from the simplest reds to the most celebrated wines,” writes Wine Enthusiast.

·    This hot ticket Direct Import won a Gold Medal from the Concours International de Lyon—one of France’s most esteemed wine competitions.

·       Founded in 1950, Château Clou du Pin is owned the Fontana family, the patriarch and his four sons, who still work each and every vintage and oversee the farming of all estate vineyards.

·       The château and its vines sit in the town of Gensac, the heart of the highest hills of the Gironde and just 15 km from St. Emilion.

TASTING NOTES

This wine has light tanins, ripe fruit flavors, and a spicy finish.

THE STORY TO KNOW

The wine estate of Fontana, founded in 1950. It is a family business, made up of several wineries. The family goal is to achieve the highest level of quality. Honor tradition combined with modern and dynamic. It is located near the village of Gensac, near the left bank of the Dordogne River, approximately 15 km south of the suburb of Saint Emilion in the region of Libournais.   Its soil composition consists of clays, limestones and coarse sands. Vinohrady is planted with varieties Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). The average yield per hectare is 55-60h.

AOC wines are under strict controls in the vineyard, cellar and geographic delimitations. An appellation d’origine contrôlée wine is also blind tasted by wine professionals to judge its “typicity,” taking into consideration the varietals, soil, climate and vintage before it can get the coveted AOC label.

PERFECT PAIRINGS

Pair this with any beef, veal, or game dish. Our favorite is trying it alongside a savory t-bone steak.
