This dense and powerful wine is meant to be an everyday red, a glass pour after a long day and something that transfers seamlessly to the dinner table.  With a spicy, floral, black fruit driven nose and a firm yet supple body, this bottle can be enjoyed in a variety of settings.  The palate is dry, structured and well balanced, showing dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant with a dusting of warm spices and a subtle oak influence.  Showcasing strength and elegance, this is a wine that will be enjoyable tomorrow and for years to come. - DZ

Making its debut on US soil, this spicy Bordeaux Superieur was one our Sourcing Team couldn’t get enough of on their last trip to France. Like most of the great vineyards of the right bank of the Garonne, Chateau Canon Montsegur is composed of mostly Merlot, with a touch of  Cabernet Franc and  Cabernet Sauvignon to produce well-structured wines that are approachable at an early age. In the words of our Tasting Panel, this is the perfect “glass poured after a long day that transfers seamlessly to the dinner table.”

Reasons why we love it:

• It’s good to have nice neighbors. Their vineyards are planted on clay-limestone plateau not far from Saint-Emilion.

• During the Middle Ages the establishment of a port city in Castillon and an important fortress built on the banks of the Dordogne galvanized this wine growing region.

• Designed to be drunk young, but with plenty of oomph to give the carte blanche for cellaring, you don’t have to feel guilty about doing both! It’s so hard not to open up a bottle you want to age when it arrives, so order at least a couple and you’re set. Willpower doesn’t have to be hard.

Inside Fact:  In the port city of Castillon, the “porte de fer” Festival occurs every summer, from July 15th to august 15th, including a spectacular sound and light show reenacting the last Battle of the Hundred Years War with over 500 actors, 100 horses and 50 rides.

TASTING NOTES

Beautiful red color in the glass with violet hues. The nose is very fresh, dominated by vegetal notes, underbrush, menthol. The palate is elegant, fresh, a chocolate creaminess and silky tannins.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Bought by the Lovato family in 1973, and directed by Gregory Lovato since 2005, a young doctor and winemaker, the castle is a property of 50 hectares including 33 hectares of vines in one piece, southeast of Saint-Emilion. Located on a gravel-siliceous soil, the castle has a soil which is ideal for growing quality vines.

Since their acquisition, the owners have made significant investments: re-planting in a thoughtful and reasoned order to obtain a more balance and better adapted grape varieties, consisting of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Erection of a new winery equipped with the latest techniques, temperature control, and automatic winding to extract a maximum of tannins, emphasizing quality, traditional vinification with long maceration,  based on the characteristics of each vintage.

The wines are red wines with aromas of red fruit, good tannic structure, elegant and round in the mouth. They can be consumed young, but are also suitable for aging.
