An Amalgamation of Rockin' Flavors
Pretty much everything I look for in a rosé. Randall Watkins first impressed us with his reds, now he's back to show his pink side. Now I do love all sorts of wines. This is one rosé that immediately stood out to me. It wasn't easy to get Laurel Glen to give it up either. They told me this usually only goes to their club members, and I am super lucky to be presenting to our members today.
Floral strawberry aromatics lift the senses. Layers of fruity flavors dance on the palate, with notes of raspberry, passionfruit, strawberry guava and a nuance of cream. Floral and juicy through the finish. This is exactly how I want my rosés to be. 94 Points - JZ June '18
Varietal Composition: 50% of mixed field blend reds, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon
Sonoma Mountain AVA, Sonoma Valley
Fermented without the skins or seeds in stainless steel tanks
Winemaking cult star, Randall Watkins. Old vine fruit. Winery exclusive (i.e. not to be found anywhere outside the winery). Yah: this is NOT your mom's Rosé. Crafted from 130 year old vines, think Southern French (Rhône and Languedoc) and Spanish rosés from Rioja and Navarra over Cali wines here. This is one hugely versatile style that stands up to big flavours. Far beyond the average; as would be expected by Randall.
Laurel Glen’s estate vineyard includes three fascinating rows of grapes. One was planted in the 1880s by the first Europeans to settle here. So old and gnarled and obscure are the vines, their various varieties have yet to be identified. They produce a pitifully small amount of juice. But, oh, what juice! Laurel Glen combines this with the fruit from two other long-established vines of Cabernet Sauvignon planted back in 1968 in this “crazy old vine” rosé.
Made entirely from red grapes fermented without the skins or seeds to produce a gorgeously pink, dry rosé with the zip of a refreshing white wine and the richness and ripe fruit of a red—not to mention the rich and wacky history that is somehow conveyed in this small-production (170 cases total) pink. Drink this tangy, strawberry and citrus scented wine on the beach, at the river or outside if at all possible. And with you favorite picnic fare.
· Bettina Sichel is the fifth generation of the Sichel family (owners of Château Palmer and Château d’Angludet in Bordeaux) to devote her working life to wine. Before purchasing Laurel Glen, this wine industry veteran helped launch Quintessa and make that winery one of Napa’s most loved.
· Laurel Glen received with CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) certification in 2014. In addition to zero chemical fertilizers or insecticides, the winery employs a minimum of irrigation water and preserves the native habitat by leaving the surrounding wild space absolutely wild.
· Partially sourced from a row of what may be the oldest surviving vines in the Sonoma Mountain appellation—planted by European settlers back in the 1880s.
· In prehistoric times the Sonoma Mountain AVA was part of the Pacific Ocean floor. Today the appellation sits at 2,463 feet above sea level and largely above the fog level, too, though the cooling influence from the coastline comes in daily and finds a footing in the slopes and grooves of the mountain.
"The 2016 Laurel Glen Rosé was made from red grapes, but the juice was fermented without the skins or seeds just like a white wine. Fermentation in a small stainless steel tank was kept at a very cool temperature in order to capture and preserve the fresh fruit aromas and flavors. The wine has a beautiful nose of grapefruit and strawberries, accompanied by juicy mouthwatering flavors of tangy cranberry." -Randall Watkins, Winemaker
From the winery:
Since 1968 our Sonoma Mountain estate vineyard has produced memorable Cabernet Sauvignon. As stewards of the land, we only farm organically. "Laurel Glen . . . and its estate Cabernet Sauvignon is at the top of the qualitative hierarchy." - Robert Parker
