Blood, sweat and tears—that’s the difference between good wine and great wine. Any obsessed vintner will agree that truly spectacular fruit is produced only by rigorous work in the vineyard. Domaine L’Ecu’s owner Fred Niger is one such winemaker—insisting on purely organic and Biodynamic farming which relies not on chemical fertilizers and insecticides but on seemingly ceaseless plowing of the soil and (rigorous” canopy management). Naturally, this Syrah is also made with 100% hand-picked fruit, zero oak, zero sulfur and absolutely zilch in the way of fining or filtering.

All this sticklering on the details translates into a fruit-bomb Rhone red with a nose of strawberry and boysenberry preserve and a palate that is similarly primary and wholly delightful. Drunk with sliced deli meats, roast chicken or any simple fare, this Rhone red is especially delicious with a light chill--15 minutes in the fridge will do it.

·    Long before the terms “certified organic” and “Biodynamic” were commonly associated with viticulture, Domaine de l’Ecu recognized the crucial importance of both. The winery was has been certified organic for more than 40 years and certified Biodynamic for more than 20.

·    Domaine de l’Ecu is also almost single-handedly responsible for the vast improvement of Muscadet, thanks to the winery’s philosophy of bottling based on specific soil type.

·    All of Domaine de l’Ecu’s wines are made from hand-harvested grapes and fermented with indigenous yeast only.

·    Nobis is 100% Syrah from a two-hectare vineyard near Châteauneuf-du-Pape, planted 25 to 30 years ago.

THE STORY TO KNOW

Domaine de l’Ecu was founded by pioneering Guy Bossard in 1972, certified biodynamic by Demeter in 1998, and has been producing unique, single terroir Muscadet for almost 40 years running. Fred Niger, who trained extensively with Guy before taking over the estate in 2012, is an equally hands on owner and fanatic in the vineyards, crops extremely low, and produces Muscadets that have remarkable depth, precision, as well as ageability.

Like Guy, Fred is deeply committed to biodynamic and organic practices but he takes these commitments even further by incorporating various types of energy work, working in terracotta amphora, and using minimal to no sulfur. Fred continues to make the domaine's stunning single parcel Muscadets maintaining their benchmark quality, while expanding the domaine's offerings with myriad single variety bottlings beyond the appellation's Melon de Bourgogne and fermenting and ageing in amphora.
