Pascual Toso is one of my personal favorite producers in Mendoza, he makes approachable wines that always drink above their price tag, and the 2012 Chard is no exception. Fresh peach and melon notes jump from the glass, leading to a palate of fresh juicy tree fruit and a zesty lemon acidity. Minimal oak is used, allowing for the bright fruit to shine through to the crisp and refreshing finish. Enjoy now through 2018. - DZ May 2016
This stony, mineral-hewn Chardonnay comes from Barrancas, Maipú District in Argentina’s famed Mendoza, an area fast becoming known for its cool-climate, vibrant wines. Our Tasting Team was unanimous in calling this one a dead ringer for a high quality California Chardonnay from one of the state’s prime AVAs for the grape, with Russian River-like notes of citrusy and creamy apple fruit and an addictive leesy, yeasty character. Tasted blind, it would be easy to mistake this estate-grown Chard for one of Sonoma’s top, delicately oaked versions of the grape.
Approximately 40% of the 2012 Chardonnay was matured in American oak barrels, for a period of just two months. This brief contact with wood has imparted a hint of sweet, cedary and toasty vanilla seasoning on the wine but without taking over the nose or palate impression and without detracting from this cool-climate Chardonnay’s pure, fresh fruit. The mouth is full of bright tropical and leaner citrus notes and the finish is crisp with still lively acidity, making this refreshing Chardonnay a lovely accompaniment to reasonably rich foods like seafood, chicken or cheese.
Reasons why we love it:
One of Argentina’s most historic estates, Pascual Toso was established back in 1890 and was founded by the legendary Don Pascual Toso, the most prominent Mendoza viticulturalist of the early 1900s. Today, this is an ultra-modern winery with state-of-the-art facilities responsible for a range of high quality reds and whites as well as the leading producer of sparkling wines in all of Argentina.
A cool climate is essential to elegant wines made from Chardonnay. This one was sourced from the Las Barrancas DOC of Mendoza, which sits at more than 750 meters above sea level and consists of sandy, calcareous and rocky soils not dissimilar to those found in Burgundy and Champagne—Chardonnays homeland. The days here are warm and the nights are cool, and these vines are naturally irrigated by crisp melted snow running off the nearby Andes Mountain range.
The 2012 vintage is Mendoza is rated as “Very Good” according to the Wine Enthusiast, and Jancis Robinson writes of the 2012 vintage in Mendoza: “Similar to 2011, but with lower yields leading to higher colour, fruit intensity and notable tannin…”
Lots of ripe green apples, pineapple, and mango fruit, this Chardonnay is fresh and racy with judicious acidity.
Founded in 1890, Pascual Toso remains faithful to its principles: Tradition, Authenticity and Innovation. Pascual Toso reflects the authentic essence of Las Barrancas, the location of its single-vineyard estate and a region of Mendoza characterized by premium soils. Its terroir-driven profile makes Pascual Toso an insider’s wine, ideal for Argentine wine aficionados.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, our founder decided to expand the business and acquired vineyards in Maipú, which he correctly believed contained the best quality grapes in the region. At his estate “Las Barrancas”, he built another winery. Today, the Maipú area is considered by technicians to be the prime wine-producing area not only in the region of Mendoza, but throughout Argentina.
