Classy Chardonnay for High-Class Individuals
That's what the name Montagu makes me think anyway (not to mention the awesome label), and the wine is fantastic! I had found these guys through the power of social media (yes, it does exist!), and was very happy to establish a direct relationship with the winery. It is paying off, this is just the first offering to release to our members. Recommended for Chard lovers of all sorts, definitely keep an eye out for more Montagu wines.
Golden pear and cream on the nose. It leads into a stone-fruit palate of peach and apricot, followed closely by honeysuckle nectar, orange flower and cantaloupe. The finish is mid-length with bright floral notes. Get it while it's hot! 93 Points - JZ May '18
Carneros, Napa Valley
From the vintage known to have over-delivered on just about everthing but the yields, this is a lovely homage to Burgundy. Rare and remarkably high-quality, a mere six barrels were produced of this pure Chardonnay. It shows the perfect influence of both its cool-Carneros climate and its renowned single vineyard source; AKA: the the Corotto Vineyard that lies between Artessa Winery and Larry Hyde’s famous vineyard.
Far from predictable, this wine shows ripe, tropical fruit and plenty of rich butterscotch notes from fermentation and aging in barrique. Working with a minimal intervention philosophy, Vintner Weston Eidson allows his Carneros fruit from some of the best terroir in the AVA to shine in every opulent mouthful. Plus this one is perfect for geeked out fans of Chard always on the lookout for boutique wines so micro-produced they’re unlikely to appear in stores or on wine lists.
· The 2014 vintage for Carneros Chardonnay was exceptional, earning 94 points from the Wine Enthusiast!
· Only six barrels of this premium, micro-produced Chardonnay were made.
· The tiny Corotto Vineyard is right next door to Hyde Vineyard—source of some of California’s most cultish Chardonnays.
· Proprietor Weston Eidson named his boutique label after his great-grandfather John, the second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and a pioneer in Briton’s automotive industry.
Montagu Wines’ Chardonnay hails exclusively from the Corotto Vineyard in the Carneros region of the Napa Valley. This Burgundian influenced Chardonnay is bright, powerful, and fruit driven with tropical fruit notes of white peach, honeyed apricots, and lemon curd with hints of mint, candied citrus and butterscotch. This wine was fermented in French barrels and spent nineteen months in barrel leading to wonderfully balanced oak integration while lees stirring developed rich complexity.
