d'Arenberg, Raymond, & More
Put the sizzle back in your barbecue and forgo the regular two-step of BBQ and beer in favor of a more flavorful pairing: BBQ and wine. Robust reds complement the smoke and spice of grilled cuisine better than most microbrews, for a taste sensation that's one step closer to grilling Nirvana. Now that's hot.
2008 d'Arenberg "The Laughing Magpie" Red Blend (McLaren Vale, Australia)
Mirroring the style of Côte-Rôtie in the Rhône Valley, d'Arenberg first produced this Shiraz-Viognier blend in 2000. A touch of Viognier adds aromatic wonder and silky elegance to the bold, dark Shiraz fruit, resulting in a most fascinating wine. Floral, jasmine, anise, white pepper, black olive, herbs. Pair it with poultry or veal.
2008 Carol Shelton "Monga Zin" Zinfandel (Lopez Vineyard, Cucamonga Valley, California)
This mouthfilling ZInfandel comes from the Jose Lopez Vineyard, a dry-farmed, CCOF-certified organic vineyard in the Cucamonga Valley planted in 1918. The chewy mouthfeel delivers humongous flavors of bright red fruit, fragrant spices, and milk chocolate. Pomegranate, wild cherry, brown sugar, caramel, and oak. Pair it with dry-rubbed chicken.
2009 Fess Parker Syrah (Nuns Cliff Vineyard, Santa Barbara County, California)
This Syrah, blended with a touch of Petite Sirah, displays a beautiful opaque garnet color and an abundance of bold aromas. Black fruit and baking spices mingle uniquely on the palate with white pepper, roasted meats, and taoasted oak. Blackberry, plum, black cherry, white pepper, and chocolate. Pair it with grilled lamb or sausage.
2008 Raymond Reserve Selection Merlot (Napa Valley, California)
This Merlot, blended from Raymond's Rutherford estate, as well as select vineyards throughout Napa, is soft with silky tannins and concentrated dark fruit. A versatile wine, it is delicious now with a variety of foods. Black cherry, blackberry, cedar, anise, and Earl Grey tea. Pair it with lamb chops, marinated pork tenderloin, or smoked salmon.
2008 Vall Llach "Embruix" Red Blend (Priorat, Spain)
On the steep slopes of Priorat, the vines that make up this wine produce small, dense clusters of grapes. Bright, ripe, and intense, "Embruix" (or "enchantment") contains Garnacha (30%), Carignan (25%), as well as smaller amounts of Cab, Syrah, and Merlot. Earth, toasted oak, black fruit, cocoa, and black licorice. Pair it with barbecued or peppered meat or fish.
2008 Urraca Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)
Mendoza is the most renowned wine region in Argentina, known for its perfect combination of soil and altitude. The area produces small grapes with concentrated flavor, color, and tannins. This Malbec is ripe, rich, and stylish. Plum, fig, black tea, licorice, and toast. Pair it with Argentine asado.
