Haras De Pirque Hussonet Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva Maipo Andes Valley 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon | Chile
In the center of Chile, one of the most renowned winegrowing areas sits at the foot of the Andes Mountains in the Maipo Valley. Here, Haras de Pirque winery is located, crafting a portfolio of exquisite, intense, generously structured wines. Their Gran Reserva 2019 cabernet sauvignon has double 90 points to its name, and we’ve got it for well under $15…plus, an even sweeter deal of under $70 for a 6-pack delivered! Ándale!
That’s UNDER $12 a bottle, folks! The Maipo Valley sits between 500 to 800 meters above sea level, with varying diurnal temperatures and thick myrtle groves filling out the native vegetation, adding a uniquely pleasing balsamic character to the wines grown here. The nearby Andes mountain range and Pacific Ocean lend a semi-arid Mediterranean climate that – along with diverse colluvial volcanic and clay soils – allows for cabernet sauvignon grapes to flourish and mature splendidly. In 2006, the winery began moving toward organic vineyard practices, which was completed with a CERES Institute certification in 2016. They proudly utilize responsible and sustainable practices across the board, from vineyard to winery, to reduce their carbon footprint and allow the land they care for to thrive not just now, but well into the future.
The 2019 cabernet is one that is wholly unique to this region, and immensely delightful in every way. There’s still a rich layer of red fruits – some cherries, and currants, plus dark, ripe plums – but there are also decidedly herbal and earthy aspects that bring in the surrounding regional elements: bay leaves, some fresh mint, a stick of toasted cinnamon, dark-chocolate covered coffee beans…this is all-in-all a seriously layered and complex cabernet, especially for the price point! Twelve months’ age time in barrel allows the flavors to coalesce into a seamless body with oaky nuances and a zipper of acidic, grippy tannins that is just alluring as can be! This is an insane quality for the value…under $14 per bottle, and if you get a 6-pack, it is under $70 for six bottles of cabernet sauvignon signed, sealed, and delivered! You’d do well to get at least a case or two of this for all your fall and winter cabernet desires!
