Petroni Vineyards Red Blend Proprietor's Reserve Moon Mountain District 2015

Red Blends  |  US

93+ points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate! The powerful vintage of 2015 (the last of a long drought for extra concentration and structure…), this Petroni red blend is a supple and powerful beast to be reckoned with. Mostly cabernet sauvignon, with a dash of sangiovese and petit verdot bringing out the best of Italy here on Sonoma County’s Moon Mountain AVA. All of this incredible goodness at over 66% OFF – makes a wine that collectors will clamor for and that daily imbibers live to sip!

SUPER TUSCANS! Can’t live without ‘em! Sassicaia. Ornellaia. Solaia. Tignanello. Yep, some of our favorite wines. And right up there with them is this newfangled American-Italian version, Petroni Red Blend Proprietor’s Reserve. It’s oozing with deeply rich and powerful cherry notes, plus spiced plums, with enough structure and supple oak to make this seem like a brand-new release! The fruit explodes in waves like firecrackers, and this is one Proprietor’s Reserve worthy of the finest occasions where only a grand and stately red will do.

Over 30 years ago, Lorenzo Petroni brought suitcase clones back from his native Italy to San Francisco, built a winery and vineyard in the hills of Sonoma, just over the crest of the Mayacamas mountain range from Napa, and orchestrated a thriving family business making some of the finest wines we’ve ever tasted in the region. This selection of the best from their estate vines is a BEAST – with more concentration, more age-ability, and this powerful tungsten mace quality that lays a challenge to many of its Napa neighbors in the $150+ category. And $150 may have been what the winery demanded this – but we’re dropping that price off a cliff for y’all…over two-thirds less than that, for a remarkable under $50!!! Pretty sweet, we think. Don’t let this deal pass you by!

About the Producer

Founder Lorenzo Petroni’s dream was to craft a California Sangiovese to rival the coveted Brunello di Montalcino. So, at the ripe age of 17, he left his hometown of Lucca and set out for San Francisco with only a few dollars in his pocket and a woman’s pant suit (true story). He worked his way up the ladder at a North Beach restaurant, and escaped to Sonoma Valley on the weekends. There, he found the perfect piece of land to plant his Sangiovese vines. After 30 years of developing the property, Lorenzo packed his vines in suitcases and smuggled them to Italy, and convinced the Italian Brunello Consorzio to allow him to use the Brunello name on his Moon Mountain Sangiovese. Petroni makes Cabernet, Sangiovese, and blends with a heart of Tuscany beating beneath its Sonoma chest.

93+ Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate -
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Proprietor’s Reserve opens with fragrant cassis, plums, blueberries and Black Forest cake with nuances of potpourri, tea and herbs plus suggestions of earth and cedar. The palate is full-bodied and laden with fruit, with firm, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long and earthy. 121 cases produced.
