Contra Costa County doesn’t get enough airtime, though it’s got some gems that are thoroughly worth checking out. It’s home to some very incredible vineyards, including Evangelho, which sits on sandy soils and boasts some of the world’s oldest grape vines. But the sandy soils are part of what makes Contra Costa great – phylloxera, the destructive root louse that decimated vineyards in Europe in the 1800s and in Napa Valley in the ‘80s and ‘90s, can’t thrive in sand. And the vineyard for this stellar wine, the Del Barba vineyard, is planted on that same sandy soil – over 100 years ago! It’s even planted on its own roots, making this is a SUPER special site, and a super special wine – that we’re simply ecstatic to share with you!
Tom Del Barba and his family have been farming this eponymously-named vineyard for six generations now, in Oakley, near Antioch. They love farming and will continue to tend to these delicate vines for years to come. The vines have deep roots and the resulting wines are very concentrated in flavor because of that and their age, which produces fewer berries but more concentrated flavors in each and every berry on the gnarly old vines. This vineyard gets plenty of heat during the day, but the evenings are cool, which promotes a harmonious balance between bright acidity and a richly sweet-seeming fruit profile…not unlike France’s Southern Rhone.
Cloudview’s 2020 Red Blend is made up of three different grape varieties, including zinfandel, petite sirah and cabernet sauvignon. It’s dense and viscous, but there’s no overwhelming weightiness to it. The flavors are rich and layered, with a palate full of dark berries and cassis, along with violets, mocha and some eucalyptus and menthol notes. It’s rich and round, and the tannins are well integrated. It's going to be a staple on our tables for all of 2025, and with the steal of the decade pricing, you can buy three bottles and watch the price go down to under $15 a piece! You can’t beat that with a stick!
About the Producer
Cloudview Cellars was founded by a Napa Valley native with a lifelong dream of creating wines of distinct character. An avid wine enthusiast, he possessed a deep love for the art of winemaking and a vision to share his passion with the world.
The winery’s name, "Cloudview," was inspired by years spent gazing at the sky, dreaming of owning a winery. Moved by the ethereal sights throughout Napa Valley, where dreams become reality, the name "Cloudview" seemed perfectly fitting.
