2Hawk Winery Tempranillo Rogue Valley 2019
Tempranillo | United States
It may seem like an anomaly, but we’ve been tasting some amazing tempranillos out of Oregon as of late. Spain’s favorite son that just so happens to ripen “a little early” (that’s what tempranillo means...) seems to thrive in Oregon’s Rogue Valley and this epic 2019 tempranillo from 2Hawk Winery was just delicious! Under $15 makes this the best price you’ll find on this wine ANYWHERE and it’s not even close!
Just about 20 miles north of the California border, in a volcanic and gravel tributary that sits at the end of a ravine running alongside the Rogue River, you’ll find the 2Hawk Winery’s estate. But not for much longer, as Ross and Jen Allen, the owners of the winery since 2014, are changing the name to Padigan. New labels, new signage, and new schwag all reflect this change, and we were asked to help them transition into those new 2020 labels a wee bit faster! Their 2018 of this wine scored a very solid 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, and although this beauty was never submitted for scores, we tasted it alongside the 2018 and liked it even better!
We’ll never pass on a deal – especially when the wine is this darn good! Their estate tempranillo is the revered clone of Tinto de Toro, from the iconically powerful red wine region of Toro, some 50 miles northwest of Madrid. Deep, rich, and concentrated, this red wine oozes withblackberry and raspberry notes, accents of cherries and cola spices, with a worn leather smoothness, and a dusty, chocolatey finish. There’s structure, but really this is all about that juicy, bright, and warm core of fruit. If you love California’s old vine zinfandels, Italian Barbera, or yes, Spain’s Rioja and Toro reds – this is something you simply have to try! For only $14.95? Get six or more!
