This is a fun wine, guys! It’s by Midnight Cellars, whose wines all have names that refer to some celestial event or body. The Solstice is a malbec that’s so good, you just might see stars! But wait, there’s more: it’s a whopping 59% off retail – under $20 from a region that’s been called “one to watch,” and with six years of age on it! This wine is the whole package and a whole lot more, so it might be time to embrace the deep purple stuff and snag some world-class malbec!

Midnight Cellars started as a joke – but no one is laughing now. Rich Hartenberger, on a family trip to Napa and Sonoma, told his dad, Robert, that he should start a winery when he retires while enjoying a glass of bubbles at Domaine Carneros in 1993. They laughed it off, but fast forward a few years, Robert retires and revisits the idea. Rich, and his new wife Michele, after some convincing, decide to go all in on helping get the winery started in Paso. That was in 1995 and they are still going strong today. It’s not clear why their wines are all astronomy-focused names, but we like to think that it’s because the stars aligned to bring these fabulous wines into our focus!

91 points from Antonio Galloni at Vinous for a Paso Robles malbec is no small feat. We might’ve scored it a bit higher because we LOVE this wine. Aged in French oak, 33% new, for 30 straight months, giving this silky tannins and a rich, mocha character. It’s packed with baking spices, dried herbs, and this delectable blueberry compote on the palate, with a very full and mouth-filling texture. Luscious, isn’t it? 2018 was an ideal growing season, perfect for creating this spectacular malbec that we’re thrilled to share with you. It’s truly delicious and, perhaps, our new favorite malbec. Paso for the win!

91 Vinous -
Inky violet. Oak-spiced dark berries, cherry, licorice and succulent herbs on the fragrant nose. Round, weighty and appealingly sweet, showing very good breadth as well as detail to the jammy red and blue fruit and vanilla flavors. The long, gently tannic finish echoes the vanilla note and leaves a hint of smokiness behind.
