Here’s a name you don’t see often around here – Steve Matthiasson. The San Francisco Chronicle’s and Food & Wine magazine’s recipient of their coveted Winemaker of the Year titles, plus a four-time James Beard Award nominee – with one of his small, insider only, winery clients – Convexity! 60% for Napa cabernet with that sort of pedigree behind it has us fired up today!

Steve has access to some of the finest vineyards in our verdant little valley, and with all of his clients, he’s got a huge pool of vinous awesomeness to make Convexity (math term – a rounded curve joining two points on a graph). We have worked out a deal to snag the very last of this savory, juicy, friendly, and forward cab – simply bubbling and percolating with red raspberries, fantastically bright minerality, sweet herbs, and espresso. It’s a treat! Better still...it finishes with juicy acidity, fresh-made berry compote, and crisp, sweet plums...mmmm, so good. The price? Even better.

The blend falls in line at 80% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verdot – with the fruit hailing from choice plots throughout Napa – including Steve’s own vineyard and a dash of the Araujo’s new Red Hen vineyard. The wine falls in line beautifully with Steve’s famous style – where terroir and transparency of fruit are of the utmost importance, and oak is an important accent and not the dominant flavor profile. This is medium weight for Napa cabernet, but very full, and elegant throughout. A worthy achievement from an exceptional winemaker (and our price is pretty special too)!
