When it comes to high-elevation, mountain-grown cabernet in the southern hemisphere, neighboring Argentina has seemingly taken all the glory. Enter Felipe Uribe, who has set out to change all that with his Andes Plateau wines. While the majority of Chilean viticulture (and the innumerable Bordeaux houses' new project ventures) are situated in the valleys and fertile soils tucked amongst Chile’s mountainous foothills, Uribe settled on a site at a staggering 700 meters, in the Maipo Valley. From his base camp there, he works with vineyards up to 1000 meters above sea level, in the mineral-rich, low-yielding, and cool sites that set him apart from the majority of Chile’s wine producers.
Uribe is considered by many to be an international savant of cool climate grape growing, with experiences that range from the cool Sonoma coast to William Fèvre’s Chilean outpost before breaking ground on the Andes Plateau project in 2013. The rocky, unforgiving slopes of Chile’s side of the Andes Mountains are notoriously difficult to farm – yet for the undaunted – they offer ample sunshine, cooling winds, and the fast-draining soils unavailable to Chile’s lower elevation sites.
Stylistically, think of this wine as one part Left Bank Bordeaux – the bright berry notes and cooling graphite influences – and one part Etna Rosso – the mineral-driven sensations of iron ore, and roasted, savory herbs, with bright, high-toned floral notes of violets, hibiscus, and rose petals. 85% cabernet sauvignon, plus a complement of syrah, cabernet franc, and merlot is the blend for 2018, and wow, it is an intricately layered powerhouse! Aged in used oak foudres for 18 months, the wine maintains a freshness and vitality to its aromatics and the ensuing palate, where light berry and plum notes perfectly meld with savory notes of tobacco leaf, roasted thyme, and marjoram, with crisp and cleansing edges of pencil led and crushed gravel. The wine is full without heaviness, and complex yet bright – an ideal wine to have with food, and enjoy over the coming 7+ years.
This is truly a wine that achieves an impeccable balance and purity not often found in Chilean wines – all at a value that makes it simply incredible. 97 POINTS and nearly 60% OFF make this a must-have for your table – tonight and anytime in the coming years!
