Derbyshire is perhaps the most extreme, coastal-adjacent vineyard in all of California. At a mere mile plus from the Pacific Ocean, and adjacent to the historic Hearst Castle in San Simeon, this is a spectacularly challenging and inspiring site to grow pinot noir in an exceptionally cool climate. Bright, pretty, spicy, and just plain delicious, this wine is a must try… especially at a rocking 47% OFF!

Overlooking the mighty Pacific, set against windswept panoramic vistas, zebra-trodden hillsides, and the gem of California’s Central Coast – the historic Hearst Castle – Derbyshire vineyard is a marvel of modern viticulture. Ray and Pam Derby have been called madmen and fools (and worse) for their decision to plant 72 acres of vineyard to cool-climate varieties such as pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, and others. Now, two decades in…perhaps the term “pioneers” is more appropriate.

Despite the fact that this vineyard has roughly the same number of “growing days” each year as Champagne, the wine showcases a beautifully aromatic nose and full palate, with ample black tea, strawberry, red plums, dark chocolate, and toasted peppercorns throughout. The wine aged for 11 months in one-third new French oak, adding weight and plushness to the bright fruit characteristics. This has hit its stride seamlessly, and is drinking extremely well – especially considering the price! Load up on this, and thank me later!
