Siena is quite possibly heaven on earth, with the Etruscan village of Montalcino sitting high on a nearby hill serving as a beacon to a better life – complete with the best wines. The co-op has growers on all four quadrants of the hill, giving them the opportunity to consistently make great wines regardless of the climactic variances from vintage to vintage. When you have a superb all-around vintage like 2016, each quadrant thrived, and the blend of all four quadrants, with 94 different growers supplying world-class sangiovese, you get some exponentially synergistic vinous juice as the result.

The wine is fermented and aged in large Slovenian oak vats for a minimum 30 months prior to a required 6+ months in bottle. All told, Brunello di Montalcino requires the wines to have 6 years of age prior to release, making this a new offering. This wine is powerful, with notes of black plums, toasted peppercorns, cocoa powder, and deep red cherries. There is an earthy, spicy finish, with sweet and smoky oak notes that extend the flavors for a solid 45 seconds. This will drink beautifully for the next two decades, easily.

About the Producer

95 James Suckling -
This has a complex nose of black plums, cloves and cigar smoke. Lots of chocolate. It's full-bodied with good depth and intensity. Firm but ripe tannins. Chocolate and cherries on the finish. Drink after 2024.
