Manzone Barbera d'Alba La Marchesa Superiore 2017 - Invino

Manzone Barbera d'Alba La Marchesa Superiore 2017

Other Reds  |  Italy

$25 for this wine has our heads spinning. Manzone is a long-time favorite producer, but this barbera is a new find for us. Hailing from the same vineyard as their cru Barolo, Gramolere, in Monforte, the wine is just about perfect. This barbera is so hedonistic and fresh, so bountiful with red fruits and heady spice, and so perfect with pizza, pasta, burgers, and more. Think of this as a more complex version of zinfandel – bigger, bolder, and layered with structure and length. This is a world-class wine that will please even the most jaded wine lover.

While the grapes are relatively dark in color, they are low in tannin, keeping the wines smooth and soft to drink but with a pop of acidity to keep it fresh. In 2017, a particularly warm vintage for the region, barbera thrived. This is a muscular iteration of the wine, with plenty of character to age for the next decade plus. But we just can’t wait… the wine is soaring in the here and now!

Taste an explosion of black cherries, red currants, cocoa powder and a whiff of Tahitian vanilla. The high acidity makes this graceful beauty dance across your tongue, finishing silky smooth and lingering on the tongue for a full 30 seconds. We got all we could, but this offer is extremely limited… trust us and pick up a few – you’ll be happy you did!

About the Producer

A lot of today's famous Barolo producers started making wine when it became the fashionable thing to do in the late 70s and 80s. Not Manzone. It all began in 1925 when Manzone Giovanni bought the "Preve Ciabot" (the priest's house) and began to use grapes from the Castelletto vineyard. In the following years they acquired important vineyards "Castelletto" and "Gramolere", two of the best cru of Monforte d'Alba. Today they have six generations of winemaking history in the books and Giovanni Manzone still runs the show. His son Mauro stepped in to help in 2005 and his daughter Mirella joined in 2012. Both graduated from the historic Alba School of Enology.

92 James Suckling -
A fruity red with blueberry and light chocolate character, as well as orange peel. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a linear finish. Compact and racy. Drink now.”
