La Serena Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Gemini 2013
Sangiovese Blends | Italy
La Serena has only recently come to the USA but has taken the most important wine market in the world by storm (and Invino has a few cases!), and here are a few words from the critics so far:
“Proprietor Andrea Mantengoli can be counted on for rich, powerful wines full of character at La Serena.” – Antonio Galloni
“His wines meet that illusive sweet point between power and elegance that is so difficult to achieve.”
So much to talk about here, but most importantly, this Riserva from the powerful ‘13 vintage will KNOCK you out. The fabulous thing here is the striking balance of sheer power and elegant complexity. Not a heavy wine, yet it soars with layers of red and blue fruits, a huge array of spices and terrific harmony of all the components. It CHARMS, it impresses. Read Galloni’s 95-point review:
VN95: “The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini shows a ripe yet earthy display of forest berries with spicy florals, notes of moist soil, crushed stone and hints of animal musk. On the palate, soft textures envelop the senses in a coating of sweet and sour red fruits and spice with a citrus twang, as tannins slowly mount, yet the Gemini maintains freshness beautifully through zesty acids and inner florals. The finish is long, turning more toward the youthfully tart side, with saturating spices and grippy tannins clenching the senses. It has many years to go before all of the elements come into balance, but once they do, pure beauty. I tasted the 2015 Gemini over the course of two days and it just kept getting better.”
The estate is directly east of Montalcino in an area that has always produced highly acclaimed Brunello. Andrea’s neighbors include Cerbaiona, Casanova di Neri and even Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo estate. The land of $100+ Sangiovese to be sure! This is a treasure for Brunello lovers and a wine that will last a decade easily! Get it while we have it, we promise you will be wishing you bought more!
