In the world of great Chablis, pricing that starts with a “2” that isn't three figures is a rare beast indeed - especially with a sweet score like this! We had to check our numbers several times...but it’s real...as long as it lasts that is! If you love crisp, minerally chardonnay as much as we do, you better be snagging some with a quickness.

Winemaker Camille Besson (daughter of Alain and 4rd generation winemakers since 1902) leads the winemaking at this family-run winery, and they are on a qualitative roll, creating textbook Chablis that can stand toe to toe with the best of the region.

Because of its south and east exposure, Vaillons mostly enjoys morning sun. Its shallow soil lets the grapes ripen quickly. The subsoil displays a high concentration of Kimmeridgian limestone with some very compact slabs in some places. The result is outstanding beyond a doubt: controlled balance, intense aromas, elegance and mineral tension — all the necessary ingredients to make Vaillons a great Chablis.

About the Producer

Domaine Besson is a perfect example, with a history extending back to 1902 and spanning four generations of winemaking. In 1902, Eug?ne Besson planted 7.58 hectares off vines in Chablis. Today his grandson, Alain, owns the Domaine. Alain?s daughter Camille received her diploma of oenology in 2013 and leads their winemaking efforts. Like most Burgundy growers, Alain holds a hearty respect for the land. He uses a minimum of sprays and fertilizers and takes a non-interventionist approach to farming. He secured some fantastic parcels over the years, expanding to 21+ hectares of Chablis, Petit Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. They produce two Grand Crus, one from Vaud?sir and the other from a tiny plot of vines smack dab in the middle of the legendary Le Clos vineyard.

The 2018 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru was picked at 58hl/ha and spent 18 months in stainless steel except for just 7% aged for 9 months in oak barrels. It offers attractive, slightly waxy aromas on the nose that give way to orange blossom and apple peel with aeration. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, and just a dab of ginger on the entry that actually resurfaces toward the finish. This is a pretty and well-executed Vaillons.
