James Suckling totally nails it: “Welcome to the delightful deep end of contemporary Beaujolais!” YES! Pinot-ish in weight, but SO much more delightfully floral, fruit-packed, spicy and utterly wonderful to drink – wow! We flipped for this, obviously, and you will too. WHAT a price!!

Once it hits your nose, you’ll know what we mean. Cool blue fruits, soaring flowers, perfume, toasted spices, mint, cola…head-spinning. 96 points! We have just a handful of cases from this world-class producer…while they lasts!

About the Producer

Like Burgundy, Les Bachelards owes its existence to the Benedictine monks. The monks of the abbey of Cluny created the sister abbey of Arpaye, and chose to plant the vineyards in the place called Les Bachelards. The Platet family bought the house and its vineyards, and were the sole owners from 1793-2007. During this long period, the Chateau was ranked among the best estates in the region due to its spectacular terroir. The vineyards have not been uprooted since Phylloxera, and the age range is 60-100 years old. Since 2007, the vineyards have been organically farmed, and in 2015, the vineyards received the demeter certificate for biodynamic farming. In 2014, the estate was acquired by Alexandra de Vazeilles and is producing gamay and chardonnay wines of extraordinary quality.

96 James Suckling -
Welcome to the delightful deep end of contemporary Beaujolais! Stunning nose of summer flowers, very fine red and black fruit with the merest hint of spice. This is simultaneously so deep and delicate, the serious concentration married to wonderful coolness. Really fine tannins make the long finish feel like old-fashioned velvet. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
93 Vinous -
Bright ruby. Highly perfumed, spice-tinged red and dark berries on the nose; suggestions of smoky minerality and candied flowers build as the wine opens up. Sappy, appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry cola and boysenberry flavors become livelier through the midpalate. Concentrated but lively in character, finishing impressively long and spicy, with interwoven tannins adding gentle closing grip.
