Domaine Albin Jacumin Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Begude des Papes 2019
Rhone Blends | France
This is a happy day here in Napa – like 2016 in Italy, or 2018 in Bordeaux, 2019 is a world-class, stellar vintage in Chateauneuf. The Jacumin husband/wife team made a simply outrageously delicious La Begude des Papes this year – 70% grenache, 15% mourvedre, 12% syrah, and 3% cinsault – with the grenache vines over 50 years old!
Not a heavy wine, but simply brimming with elegant, silky-yet-powerful kirsch and blue fruits, sweet herbs, licorice, anise and flowery pastille scents and flavors, wonderfully fresh and deep and wildly drinkable. A good one for the cellar, too – up to a decade, we’d think!
About the Producer
The Jacumin family has been involved in winemaking in the region for almost 120 years. The domaine was founded in 1991, and the first vintage was released in 1995. They own 19 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape -- 25 hectares are reserved for their white Chateauneuf du Pape, and 6 hectares of vines are in the Cotes du Rhone appellation. La Begude is produced from Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. The Grenache vines are more than 50 years of age, and the vines are planted in the les Brusquieres lieu-dit, which is a mix of rocks, stones and limestone soil.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Begude Des Papes is outstanding. Based on 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, it’s a medium to full-bodied, ripe, yet nicely balanced 2019 offering terrific purity of fruit, notes of peppery herbs, leather, and darker fruits, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It’s rock-solid and has a decade of prime drinking ahead of it.

Brilliant ruby-red. Lively red and blue fruits, savory herbs and candied flowers on the spice- and mineral-accented nose. Sappy cherry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors deepen and turn sweeter through the midpalate. Blends depth and energy with a steady hand and finishes long and smooth, with a repeating cherry note and harmonious tannins.
