D'Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 2017
Other Reds | Italy
Any Italian wine expert will tell you, nebbiolo rules the north, sangiovese sits on the throne in Italy’s heart, but in the south, here is where aglianico is KING! If you like juicy, deep, lip-smacking, tongue-staining wines...have we got a wine for you! UNDER $15, from the volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture, and made at the family’s estate for almost 100 years, this is the power of Napa cab, with the juicy red fruits of zinfandel – it’s a stunning combination that you just can’t miss!
The 2019 version of this wine was named Wine Spectator's #49 wine of 2022 – a worthy inclusion. We tried them both side by side a couple of months back, and the entire tasting team preferred this vintage. Both are great, fantastically over-delivering monsters of concentration and depth, but yeah, 2017 was the winner – with this penetrating, juicy core of red fruits that puts it over the top! We’ve been importing these wines directly for years, from the very moment we tasted them in Italy several years back.
This historic Basilicata winery concentrates on various single-vineyard expressions of the aglianico grape, and possesses some of the oldest and most important cru vineyards on the extinct Monte Vulture volcano, benefitting from impeccable exposure and high elevation, as well as loads of mineral-rich volcanic soils. This over-delivering wine is a blend of the juice that makes the estate's pricier single-vineyard bottlings, and, not surprisingly, has been hailed as one of the best quality-for-price aglianicos anywhere! We agree, the taste per dollar here is through the roof! Grab a 6-pack and drink this with all types of meaty fare, like rack of lamb, grilled tri-tip, burgers, and more!
Utterly delicious, and generous, with so much crunchy red fruit, ultra-fresh sensations with red cherry and red raspberry, pomegranate, and lightly toasted spices – all culminating in a mineral and structured finish...simply fantastic! This is a candidate for the perfect summer grilling wine – so grab yourself some of Italy’s best-kept secret!
