D'Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 2017
Other Reds | Italy
For $14.95, it is extremely hard to find as satisfying a bottle as D’Angelo’s lip-smacking, deep, fresh Aglianico. We’ve been importing this directly for years, from the moment we tasted it at a trade tasting in Italy. D'Angelo is a historical family estate in the heart of the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. Producing wine on the slopes of Mount Vulture, an acidic volcano (now extinct) since the 1930s and concentrating on the Aglianico varietal, Southern Italy's king of red grapes.
The winery concentrates on various single-vineyard expressions of the Aglianico grape, and possesses some of the oldest and most important cru vineyards on the volcano, benefitting from impeccable exposure and high elevation, as well as mineral rich volcanic soils. Their entry level wine is a blend of the fruit left over from the sorting table that make the estate's single vineyard bottlings, and has been hailed as one of the best quality-price Aglianico's available. We agree, the taste-per-dollar here is through the roof! Grab a 6-pack and drink this will all types of winter fare, like rack of lamb or roasted rabbit.
Utterly delicious, as always, with so much crunchy red fruit, ultra-fresh with red cherry and red raspberry, pomegranate, and lightly toasted spices...just fantastic! Get it while it’s here!
