Il Macchione Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2011
Sangiovese Blends | Italy
You are NOT drinking enough Montepulciano! At often HALF the price of the showier big names of Montalcino, to boot! Both wines are Sangiovese-based, THE important grape of the region, of course, but Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the ORIGINAL.
Now, when we slash the price by another 50%, that is when you stop everything and buy all that you can! Normally a staple on restaurant lists around the Bay Area and top NYC joints, this parcel, along with the 2014 normale that we sold, was originally earmarked for Danny Meyer's restaurants until, well...you know, the global pandemic.
What a price, this is in a PERFECT drinking spot -- all the exuberant cherry and dried fruits that we love about Sangiovese, with another level from bottle age of complex spices and rounded, warm, fleshy texture. So good and rich and a massive step up from the normale that we sold several months back.
It’s a bit of a secret inside the wine biz: Il Macchione’s wines often beat Brunello di Montalcino (typically much more expensive!) regularly in blind tastings. Brothers Simone and Leonardo Abram, natives of Trentino, purchased Il Macchione in 2007, and have continued the work of previous proprietor Robert Kengelbacher, who’d been quietly turning out some of Montepulciano’s best wines since the 1980s, in addition to converting the entire property to organic and biodynamic viticulture.
