About the Producer

Canard Vineyards have been creating hand-crafted wines in Napa Valley since 1984. Each year, they produce nine single vineyard wines, each one expressing a different terroir. The residence has a long history in the valley, being built in 1859 and was the original homestead of Reason P. Tucker, who gained notoriety for leading the search and rescue efforts to rescue the survivors of the ill-fated Donner Party. Rich and Carolyn Czapleski purchased the Canard Vineyard in 1983 and turned the surrounding grounds into something magical. Rich's philosophy is "if you take care of the vines, the vines take care of you." Rich and Carolyn have assembled a small but talented team who share their desire to make the finest wines possible, while maintaining great integrity and respect for the land.

92 Vinous -
Canard's Merlot-based 2016 The Rescuer is dark, pliant and super-expressive, with all of its elements in the right place. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, lavender, grilled herbs, spice, menthol and licorice are all found in this pretty, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon from Canard. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 has more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years, although I would cellar it first to allow the tannins to soften.
