Masciarelli Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2022
Trebbiano | Italy
Trebbiano is loved for being “easy but not simple” – and that’s what will make this your new, anytime dinner white. It really can be almost daily at only $14.95 a bottle!
The Abruzzo region is in central Italy, about 100 miles east of Rome along the Adriatic Sea. The wines aren’t as famous as bottles from places like Tuscany and Piedmont, but it’s a gorgeous area, with so much protected public land that it’s known as Italy’s “green lung” – and popping with really well-priced wines of great quality if you know where to look.
Their signature white is Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Why do you need it? Because it’s a daily drinker and reliable food friend… elevated by the Masciarelli family into something with character! A table wine to fall in love with. This 2022 has all the citrusy quench and unctuous depth you could ask for on a Thursday, and at $14.95 a bottle, don’t even spend a second debating whether you should open it.
The nose is a swirl of yellow apple, pear, and tangy kumquat. The palate is zippy and sunny-warm, delivering Meyer lemon, beeswax, lemon verbena, crushed rock, and mellow almond essence. It all peaks in a lightly saline finish, with acid coming in at the end to prep your tongue for another bite of whatever is on your plate. We drank it with cast-iron chicken in a casual gravy (a dash of the Trebbiano whisked in) and a salad of endive, pear, and feta. The bitterness of the endive was a perfect, vigorous counterpoint to the richer notes in the wine.
Order at least six for shipping included, but since this bottle goes down easily, you might want to grab a few more. $14.95?! Can’t go wrong.
About the Producer
Masciarelli, which is based in Abruzzo, Italy, was founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli. He is credited for dramatically raising the region’s wine reputation and potential, particularly through native varieties such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano. Following Gianni’s death in 2008, the winery entered a new chapter under the leadership of his wife, Marina Cvetic, and their daughter, Miriam, who is on the winemaking team. Masciarelli Tenute Agricole now spans all four provinces of Abruzzo – Chieti, Teramo, Pescara, and L’Aquila – with more than 60 vineyard parcels across 13 municipalities.
