Ponzi Pinot Noir Tavola Willamette Valley 2022
Pinot Noir | US
Did you see this gem from Oregon? Is it a gleaming little sunstone? A perfect Ursula K. Le Guin novella? So close – it's Ponzi’s terrific 2022 “Tavola.” Exactly what we want in an everyday Pinot, and way more pristine than you have the right to hope for at under $20! Plus: 92 points!
This has no business being so complete at the winery’s full price of $35 – let alone our $19.95 deal. By the way, while it has some classic Pinot character, it’s a wine you can confidently pour for anyone who likes medium-bodied reds in general. It’s bright, polished, and juicy, with 25% new French oak for shape. Jolly notes of strawberry gummy candy and boysenberry are gushing from start to finish, supported by citrus peel, wet clay, and spice. It’s chewy and shiny and smart and crushable!
The critics are with us: 92 points from James Suckling for its “delicious fruit and a zesty undertone.” 91 from Wine Spectator, calling it “plush and generous.” And 91 from Wine Advocate, who liked its “silky tannins and bright acidity.” Strong validation for a screwcap that’s meant to be opened anytime, anywhere.
The fruit is 100% Pinot Noir from the Aurora and Avellana Vineyards. Highly respected winemaker Luisa Ponzi always brings a sense of clarity and emotional arc to her wines. Her father was founder Dick Ponzi, a sort of mystical creature in Oregon wine. He was also a Disney engineer and the founder of BridgePort Brewing. Order at least two for our best price, but this is one where you’d do well to go for a 12-bottle case and keep enjoying through 2031. The Willamette Valley is known for rain, but this little beauty will beam sunshine into your heart every time you open it.
