Tenuta Perano is a phoenix rising. The estate – formerly called Castello di San Donato in Perano – dates back to the 16th century. It went bankrupt in 2014, then the revered winemaking family of Marchesi Frescobaldi swooped in and leased and later purchased it. The vine rows march across a sort of natural amphitheater with steep angles, south-facing sunshine, and continuous airflow – ideal for ripening Sangiovese. With an emphasis on quality, organic practices, and authentic expression, Perano’s fresh chapter is hopeful.

The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Think for a moment about how much it would cost to get yourself to Tenuta Perano. Silver lining of our modern world, you can soak up the estate’s goodness for just $19.95. That’s pretty wonderful. Bright notes of cherry, plum, and blackberry mingle with red roses, clove, and cardamom, with lashings of espresso and dark chocolate. The finish has mineral-tinged acidity and succulent tannins that coat the mouth generously. A little Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend deepen the complexity. 93 points from Wine Enthusiast! Lovers of lively, rich, romantic drinks, this is what we call a find.

About the Producer

Tenuta Perano stands as a compelling Tuscan revival story, its roots tracing back to the 16th-century estate once known as Castello di San Donato in Perano. Following bankruptcy in 2014, the historic property found new life under the stewardship of Marchesi Frescobaldi, one of Italy’s most respected winemaking dynasties, who first leased and ultimately acquired the vineyards. Perched at roughly 500 meters above sea level, the estate’s south- and southwest-facing slopes form a natural amphitheater—an ideal setting for the slow, even ripening of Sangiovese. Today, with a clear focus on quality, organic farming, and precision winemaking, Tenuta Perano is producing vibrant, terroir-driven expressions of Chianti Classico that signal a confident and dynamic new chapter.
