Brij Mourvèdre San Benito County 2023
Mourvèdre | US
Wine Advocate calls this savory little vixen “herbal and spry” with “a silky, high-toned profile that sacrifices none of the vineyard's palpably mineral nature.” Of course, super-hip winemaker Raj Parr wanted to work with Mourvèdre from the historic Enz Vineyard. 92 points, off-the-charts charm – and we have it for just $19.95 when you order two or more. Your next discovery right here!
Enz was planted in 1922 in the Lime Kiln Valley AVA, a tiny, limestone?rich region in the Cienega Valley. When we tell you Enz is one of the oldest Mourvèdre vineyards in California, we should be clear: the fruit in this bottle comes from those original vines planted 104 years ago! Picture head?trained, dry?farmed, own-rooted, gnarled vines – pruned in the basket-weave shape for extra support and optimal cluster exposure. Here are three very cool photos of the vineyard. $19.95 is a great price for the collectible significance alone.
And it tastes fantastic, too. This 2023 is a wonderfully unique, savory drink, and as Wine Advocate’s 92-point review noted, “it should be quite versatile at the table.” There’s a zesty, percolating playfulness lifting up dark, untamed, muscular tones. The body is medium-light. Blackberry notes take the lead, supported by Greek olives, pipe tobacco, and worn leather. Swirl your glass a few extra times to unlock gentle florals and red cherries, which nicely soften the feral, grippy finish. Now we’re in the mood to see the new Wuthering Heights, then open this with something lipsmacking – how about lamb shanks braised with red wine and olives?
What a special bottle for under $20! That’s 56% off the $45 release price. We encourage you to shake things up and try something different. Get at least six to make sure we cover your shipping.
About the Producer
Brij Wines is sommelier-turned-winemaker Rajat “Raj” Parr’s regenerative farming and négociant project on California’s San Luis Obispo Coast and neighboring regions. The label honors his Indian heritage (Brij is his middle name). Parr sources organically farmed fruit from vineyards with marine-influenced soils – dry-farmed or minimally irrigated – and applies minimalist winemaking techniques: native-yeast fermentation, neutral aging vessels, and minimal sulfur. The resulting wines are clean, lively, and deeply expressive of place, balancing freshness, minerality, and restrained power. Under the Parr Collective umbrella, Brij exemplifies sustainability, terroir-driven approach, and a thoughtful, personal winemaking vision.
