Iris Vineyards Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2021
Chardonnay | US
We are 85% sold through on this lovely Chardonnay from Oregon’s southern Willamette Valley. If you’d like more, or are ready to try something clean and light as the weather heats up, now is the time. At $14.95 per bottle, why not?!
We’re big proponents of Oregon whites, including this classy bottle of joy. It’s a crowd-pleaser – clean, electric, delicate – and has a good chance of winning over Sauv Blanc and Pinot Gris drinkers, too. Plus, versatile with food, a lovely light 12.7% alcohol… altogether a practical little gem to load up on, especially at under $15 on six or more.
This 2021 was grown on the Iris Vineyards estate in the cooler Lorane Valley foothills of the Coast Range, southwest of Eugene (go Ducks!). The wine was aged on lees in oversized French barrels – we’re guessing neutral oak. Flavor-wise, this doesn’t scream “Chardonnay” – it whispers it. We start with a delicious surprise of almond essence, vanilla fondant, and licorice on the nose. The palate has a sponge cake note that’s somehow spacious and crisp. Then comes yellow apple and zingy lime sherbet, followed by lemon curd creaminess. The acid is well integrated and reads as freshness and quench. We didn’t see any reviews, but Wine Enthusiast rated the previous vintage 93 points.

About the Producer
Iris Vineyards was founded in the mid-1990s by Oregon natives Pamela Frye and Richard Boyles in the cooler Lorane Valley foothills of the Coast Range, which is southwest of the town of Eugene in the southern Willamette Valley. The team aims to reflect the purity and elegance of their Chalice Vineyard, which rises to 1,000 feet on mostly deep, well-drained volcanic and sedimentary soils with a reddish hue. The focus from the start was estate-grown Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, and Iris has since added sparkling and rosé. Winemaker Aaron Lieberman came on board in 2008, and puts his Oregon State University background in soil science to good use as he explores the nuance and potential of the 43-acre site.
