If you like Napa Valley mountain cabernet, Atlas Peak is a great choice – and Lobo Wines is definitely the wine for you! Price drops to $39.95 per bottle when you purchase 2 or more bottles – making this 92-point Napa cab right at the top of our wishlist.

Lobo Wines was founded by Krys and Randy Wulff (pronounced “wolf.”) “Lobo” in Spanish means “wolf.” There’s even a wolf graphic that dons every bottle of Lobo wine…so who’s ready to join the pack and grab a glut of this wine? In the arid, practically desolate area of Atlas Peak, the Wulffs wanted to show the appellation’s potential. And boy, have they! Their wines, currently crafted by their director of winemaking, Victoria Coleman, have entered into a league of their own under her purview.

Atlas Peak, one of Napa’s esteemed mountain appellations, is located in a southerly part of the valley. It’s set on the eastern side of the valley, in the Vaca mountain range, which was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Because it receives some of the lowest rainfall in all of the valley, the vines really struggle to produce, but when those vines do produce fruit, it’s some of the best fruit you’ll ever taste.

This 2020 cabernet was aged in 50% new French oak for 19 months. And though Lobo hangs its hat on its cabernets, most of the time the cabernets are blended with scant amounts of other Bordeaux varieties. Here, for the first time in a decade, the wine is 100% cab due to the growing conditions of the vintage. It overflows with flavors or currants, sassafras, and cherry cola, with cigar box and bergamot at the end. There’s a bright acidity that gives it the structure needed for seemingly unlimited aging, alongside medium-firm tannins. This just might be a classic in the making. And if you’re a true lover of real Bordeaux, this one might just have you fooled. It’s so Bordeaux-like in style that even the most discerning of wine connoisseurs will be toying with notions of Margaux. Under $70 for one is already 44% off the winery retail. But dropping to a huge discount if you buy two – only $39.95 a bottle?!?! That’ll start a feeding frenzy, won’t it? We think a case of this incredible stuff might just be in your future. Aahwoooo!

About the Producer

Lobo Wines is the shared passion of proprietors, Krys and Randy Wulff. Lobo is Spanish for “wolf,” and named as a tribute to Napa’s Hispanic work force.

The Wulffs began making their artisanally crafted wines in 2007 to wide and now consistent acclaim. Their array of wines—all from single vineyard 100% estate grown fruit—include two Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Rosé of Pinot Noir and a proprietary red blend called “Howl.” Lobo wines are limited production and meticulously, sustainably farmed.

92 Wine Enthusiast -
This nicely concentrated wine is superfocused on black cherries and black currant, with subtle oak spices supporting all that delicious fruit flavor. A full body, moderate tannins and a nice nip of acidity give it good balance. Enjoy now and through 2030. — Jim Gordon
