This is one of those Rutherford cabs that’s simply classic, layered, rich, complex, bold, and enduring – you know, basically, all the things you could ever possibly want in a luxurious, opulent red! Sullivan’s been making impressive cabernet sauvignons and merlots since the 1970s, sourcing from the distinguished fruit in the heart of Rutherford. In fact, this wine’s name, “Cour de Vigne,” literally means “heart of the vine” and is blended with the very best cabernet on the estate, plus 8% petit verdot and 2% of cabernet franc and merlot each. Founded in 1972 by Jim O’Neil Sullivan, the family-run winery only sold direct for several years, usually to friends and family – though, as word has spread, its name has catapulted to star status for eager Napa Valley collectors and other fine wine fanatics.
One such super-fan, Juan Pablo Torres Padilla, bought the winery a few years ago and sought to preserve and ameliorate the estate’s grand portfolio, investing in a new winery, in-depth vineyard maintenance, and a facelift for the hospitality center. The external improvements didn’t change the classic greatness of the wines, however – you’ll still get the quintessential Rutherford characteristics you know and love: structure, layeredness, and a deep richness. The 2019 lives up to all that hype – producing elements of dusty cherries, black olive tapenade, blackberry jam, baked plum, porcini mushrooms, charred earth, and a mineral graphite sensation. You’ll get a wicked depth and structure on the finish to round out this Rutherford beast of a cab. It’s drinking extraordinarily well now with room to age for many years to come…so, load up for now and later – at this price, and this caliber of wine, you’ll be thankful you did!
