Degani Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Cicilio 2019
Red Blends | Italy
Baby Amarone, Baby! Save nearly 45% on this rich and delicious cherry berry red. If you like big, bold, textured reds like Brunello, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, or old vine zinfandel, then this is the budget equivalent that delivers at half the price.
The Degani brothers, Aldo and Luca, invest time and effort into their Ripasso. After the first fermentation, this wine is rested in tank for a few months before being poured over the skins and lees from the Amarone wines. This creates another fermentation where the wine gains complexity, body, and velvety mouthfeel. It is then aged for a further 24 months in barrel, smoothing out rough tannins and adding nuance to the dense fruit.
All this painstaking attention…and for under $20!?!!?! Madness. Delicious madness!
Valpolicella Ripasso Classico in Verona, Italy, is a great place to start if you love new-world wines and want to grow your appreciation of the old world. This wine is rich, fruit-forward, and round with plenty of baking spice and the faintest hints of juniper and fresh pine. Taste brandied cherries, fig jam, golden raisin, and the subtlest whisper of peat moss, winding down into a warming, brown-butter finish. Fair Verona, you have stolen our hearts yet again!
Take advantage of the best price in the U.S. Less than $20 for what amounts to be a Baby Amarone!
About the Producer
Located in Valgatara, in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region, brothers Aldo and Luca Degani are a generation of growers running a small, dynamic winery in their simple cellar. Founded in 1970, the winery produces only 5 wines and approximately 40,000 bottles annually. Year over year, their adherence to the local traditions demonstrates that quality depends primarily on what nature provides. The Degani brothers own 6 hectares of vineyards in Marano and Fumane, in the heart of the Classico region, re-planted over 25 years ago. The vineyards are between 150-180 meters above sea level, with rows running north-south for maximum sun exposure.
