The wine comes from the hands of New Zealand-born winemaker, Matt Sands, who made his way to California originally not for wine, but for snowboarding. As a board instructor at Lake Tahoe, he met his now-wife, Amanda, before moving back to New Zealand in 2009 to soak up everything he could learn about making wine at Passage Rock Winery for four years. In his desire to return to California, he reached out to about 100 wineries he hoped to work for in Napa but only got offers from three. The one he accepted was from Screaming Eagle. After some time, he synched up with Philippe Melka and began working at Lithology in St. Helena, under which the Pursuit label falls. Matt credits his Kiwi heritage and training for much of his winemaking philosophy and success and aims to track down the best fruit available to craft exceptional wines for Pursuit, Lithology, and several brands beyond Napa. He prioritizes minimal intervention and a light touch to allow the grapes’ qualities and environment to shine of their own accord.

The harvest from 2020 produced smaller fruit, granting this wine a tighter structure that’s all at once well-rounded and laced with subtle vanilla and floral notes thanks to a 20-month sit on 15% new oak.
